7-Keto DHEA is a naturally occurring DHEA metabolite with a meaningfully cleaner profile than DHEA itself for one specific reason: it does not convert to testosterone or estrogen. This makes it relevant for the population who want thermogenic and metabolic support without the hormonal downstream effects of standard DHEA. The thermogenic mechanism through thyroid hormone activity is real and documented, but the human evidence base is small and the trials are predominantly short and industry-funded. Worth including in this guide as a lesser-known compound with a credible mechanism and better safety profile than its parent compound.

What 7-Keto DHEA does in the body
Thermogenesis through thyroid hormone upregulation (specifically T3), modest fat loss, and lean mass support without conversion to sex hormones. 7-Keto DHEA (3-acetyl-7-oxo-dehydroepiandrosterone) is a DHEA metabolite produced naturally in the adrenal glands and skin. Unlike DHEA itself, 7-Keto DHEA cannot be converted to testosterone or estrogen because it lacks the 3-hydroxyl group required for the conversion pathway. This structural distinction is what gives it a fundamentally different safety profile from DHEA for hormonal health applications.
The evidence
What the research actually shows
Emerging. A small 8-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (n=30) found 7-Keto DHEA at 200 mg daily combined with an exercise program and diet produced significantly greater weight loss (3.05 kg greater than placebo) and significantly greater reductions in body fat percentage. The thermogenic mechanism specifically involves upregulation of three thermogenic enzymes and elevation of T3 thyroid hormone. A second trial confirmed the thermogenic enzyme effect. The evidence base is positive but limited to small, short, industry- funded trials without independent replication at meaningful scale.

Getting 7-Keto DHEA from food
7-Keto DHEA is produced endogenously in the body from DHEA and declines with age similarly to DHEA itself. No meaningful food-form equivalent exists. The lifestyle factors that best support endogenous 7-Keto DHEA and DHEA production include adequate sleep, resistance training, and stress management, all of which support adrenal health broadly.
