Is Selenium worth taking?
Two to three Brazil nuts per day covers the selenium requirement entirely from food, making this one of the clearest food-first wins in this guide. If not eating Brazil nuts regularly, supplement 100 to 200 mcg selenomethionine daily. Never exceed 400 mcg. Selenium toxicity (selenosis) is real. Always pair with iodine for thyroid support.

Brazil nuts are in my kitchen every week. Two nuts per day is genuinely one of the highest-return, lowest-effort nutritional habits available. I recommend food-first for selenium above almost any other compound in this category.

Selenium for longevity and immune resilience
Selenium is an essential trace mineral where the therapeutic window is genuinely narrow, one of the few supplements where both deficiency and excess are clearly harmful. It is essential for selenoprotein synthesis, which includes glutathione peroxidase (the key enzyme that uses glutathione to neutralize hydrogen peroxide) and thyroid hormone metabolism enzymes. Deficiency is common in regions with low-selenium soils (much of Europe, New Zealand, and parts of China and the US). Supplementation in deficient populations improves immune function and thyroid health. The SELECT trial found supplementation in selenium-adequate men did not reduce prostate cancer risk and may have increased it at high doses. Brazil nuts are the most potent food-form selenium source, where 1 to 3 nuts per day covers the daily requirement without supplementation.
What it does
Selenoprotein synthesis support (particularly glutathione peroxidase and thioredoxin reductase), thyroid hormone metabolism, immune function maintenance, antioxidant defense, and DNA repair support. Selenium is incorporated into selenocysteine, a rare amino acid found at the active sites of the 25 human selenoprotein enzymes whose functions span antioxidant defense, immune modulation, thyroid hormone activation, sperm maturation, and DNA synthesis.
The evidence
Moderate, with important baseline status dependency. In selenium-deficient populations, supplementation meaningfully improves immune function, thyroid health, and antioxidant capacity. The KiSel-10 study found selenium plus CoQ10 supplementation in elderly Swedes significantly reduced cardiovascular mortality over 4 years. The SELECT trial in selenium-adequate men found no prostate cancer benefit and a possible increased risk at 200 mcg daily, reinforcing the importance of baseline status assessment. For most people in selenium-sufficient regions, supplementation adds little benefit and carries toxicity risk at higher doses.
Food first
Brazil nuts are the standout food-form selenium source, typically providing 70 to 90 mcg selenium per nut, meaning 1 to 2 nuts per day covers the daily requirement for most adults. Tuna, halibut, sardines, shrimp, eggs, and lean meats also provide meaningful selenium. Note the same caveat as the Category 01 selenium entry: Brazil nut selenium varies enormously with soil, so treat them as your selenium source rather than an addition on top of a supplement.
