The verdict

Is Vitamin D3 + K2 worth taking?

Vitamin D3 behaves more like a steroid hormone than a vitamin. It influences gene expression in virtually every tissue in the body. Most adults living indoors are functionally deficient. Always take D3 with K2 MK-7. K2 directs the calcium D3 mobilizes toward bones and away from arterial walls. Without K2, long-term high-dose D3 raises cardiovascular calcification risk. Test your 25-OH-D level. Clinical sufficiency is generally set at 30 ng/mL; the 40 to 60 ng/mL range often cited in performance contexts is an optimization target and a judgment, not a consensus guideline.

What it does

What Vitamin D3 + K2 does in the body

Bone density, immune modulation, hormonal regulation, mood, cardiovascular protection, and systemic inflammation control. Vitamin D3 is best understood not as a vitamin but as a steroid hormone precursor. It activates receptors in virtually every tissue in the body, influencing gene expression on a scale that no other single nutrient matches. The majority of adults living and working primarily indoors are functionally deficient. K2 (MK-7) is the essential partner. It directs the calcium that D3 mobilizes toward bones and teeth and away from arterial walls. These two should never be separated.

The evidence

What the research actually shows

Among the most researched compounds in clinical nutrition. Deficiency is consistently linked to immune dysfunction, depression, poor bone health, hormonal imbalance, and increased all-cause mortality risk. K2 MK-7 evidence is strong for bone and cardiovascular applications.

Food first

Getting Vitamin D3 + K2 from food

Sun exposure remains the most biologically natural D3 source. 15 to 20 minutes of midday full-body sun can produce 10,000 to 20,000 IU. The problem is modern life does not reliably deliver this. Food sources including fatty fish, egg yolks, beef liver, and cod liver oil contribute meaningfully but cannot realistically maintain optimal serum levels. For K2, natto is the standout food source followed by aged hard cheeses and grass-fed butter.

What I cooked this week

That is ten of them, with the research behind each. Every fortnight I send one meal from a working private kitchen — what I cooked, why, and what it was for. And when new evidence moves a grade in the guide, subscribers hear it first.
