Boron is an underappreciated trace mineral that amplifies the effects of vitamin D and magnesium, reduces SHBG to free up testosterone, and supports electrolyte balance. Most multivitamins include it at too low a dose. For testosterone and vitamin D optimization, target 6 to 10 mg daily from a standalone chelated supplement. Practical and inexpensive with no significant side effects at recommended doses.

Raisins, prunes, avocado, almonds, and dried apricots are among the best food sources. Reaching the 6 to 10 mg therapeutic range consistently from food alone is impractical for most people.

Boron for hormonal support
Boron is probably the most underappreciated mineral in hormonal health discussions. It appears to reduce SHBG, thereby increasing free testosterone availability, while simultaneously supporting vitamin D activation and reducing inflammatory markers. The key trial is small (8 subjects) but the findings are methodologically solid and the mechanism through SHBG modulation is biochemically credible. Dietary intake is highly variable depending on soil boron content, making deficiency more common than generally recognized. Gets EMERGING rather than MODERATE primarily because of the trial size limitations.
What it does
SHBG reduction to increase free testosterone bioavailability, vitamin D activation support, estradiol reduction in men, and anti-inflammatory activity. A well-controlled 10 mg daily boron trial in healthy men found significant increases in free testosterone and significant decreases in SHBG and estradiol within one week, alongside meaningful reductions in inflammatory markers including CRP and TNF-alpha.
The evidence
Emerging. The primary human trial showing hormonal effects used only 8 subjects, which prevents definitive conclusions despite statistically significant and directionally consistent findings. Boron’s role in vitamin D metabolism and bone health has more established evidence across a broader research base. The SHBG-mediated free testosterone effect is mechanistically credible and aligns with the limited trial data, but requires replication in larger properly powered studies before a moderate rating is justified.
Food first
Prunes, raisins, avocado, and almonds are among the richest food sources of boron. A diet emphasizing these foods can meaningfully increase boron intake toward the range showing hormonal effects, making this one of the more achievable food-first approaches in this category.
