Is Wild Yam / Diosgenin worth taking?
Wild yam is marketed as a natural source of progesterone or DHEA, often under language suggesting the body will convert its diosgenin content into these hormones. This cannot happen. The human body does not possess the enzymes required to convert diosgenin into progesterone, DHEA, or any other steroid hormone. That conversion requires laboratory chemical processes. Products marketed as natural progesterone or DHEA from wild yam are selling a biochemical impossibility. The confusion partly arises from the historical use of diosgenin as a starting material in the pharmaceutical synthesis of progesterone in the 1940s, a laboratory process with no equivalent in human physiology.

What Wild Yam / Diosgenin does in the body
Marketed as a natural source of progesterone or DHEA to support hormonal balance, particularly in women. In reality, wild yam root contains diosgenin, a steroidal saponin precursor that can be chemically converted to progesterone and other steroids in a laboratory through a multi-step synthetic process. This laboratory conversion has no equivalent in human metabolism.

What the research actually shows
Overhyped based on a biochemical impossibility. No human trial has demonstrated that oral or topical wild yam increases serum progesterone, DHEA, or any other steroid hormone through endogenous conversion. A double- blind crossover trial found wild yam cream produced no changes in serum progesterone, DHEA, androstenedione, or testosterone compared to placebo. Any product marketing wild yam as a source of natural progesterone or DHEA is making a claim that contradicts fundamental biochemistry.

Wild yam is consumed as a food in various cultures where it is treated as a starchy root vegetable. Culinary use is entirely distinct from the supplement marketing based on diosgenin conversion and represents a legitimate food with nutritional value that does not include meaningful hormonal effects.
