Is Capsaicin worth taking?
Capsaicin has a real and well-characterized mechanism through TRPV1 receptor activation that produces measurable thermogenesis and appetite reduction. The effect size is real but modest, roughly a 50 to 100 kcal per day additional energy expenditure in most trials, which is meaningful as a supplementary tool but not transformative on its own. Dihydrocapsiate (from sweet peppers) is a non-pungent capsaicinoid with comparable thermogenic activity but without the GI irritation that limits capsaicin tolerance at higher doses.

What Capsaicin does in the body
Thermogenesis through TRPV1 (transient receptor potential vanilloid 1) receptor activation, modest appetite reduction, and a small but real increase in fat oxidation. TRPV1 activation by capsaicin triggers the release of catecholamines that stimulate lipolysis and thermogenesis, a mechanism distinct from caffeine’s adenosine blockade and EGCG’s COMT inhibition, making capsaicin a complementary rather than redundant thermogenic tool.

What the research actually shows
Moderate. Multiple well-designed trials confirm capsaicin produces measurable increases in energy expenditure and fat oxidation, with most trials finding additional expenditure in the range of 50 to 100 kcal per day above control. A 2017 meta-analysis confirmed significant reductions in energy intake alongside thermogenic activity. Tolerance to the thermogenic effect does not appear to develop as rapidly as tolerance to the pungency sensation, meaning repeated daily use maintains some thermogenic benefit even as the burning sensation becomes more familiar.

Getting Capsaicin from food
Cayenne pepper, chili peppers, and hot sauces deliver capsaicin from food and have a legitimate place in a fat metabolism dietary approach. Adding capsaicin-containing foods to meals consistently contributes to the appetite and thermogenesis effects without supplementation, albeit at lower doses than clinical trials used.
