Is Green Tea Extract / EGCG worth taking?
Green tea extract has real thermogenic and fat oxidation data behind it, but the effect size in isolation is modest. Where it earns its place is in combination: caffeine plus EGCG produces a meaningfully greater thermogenic effect than either alone, and this is one of the most consistently replicated findings in the fat metabolism supplement literature. Standardized to EGCG content, not total polyphenols. Take with food to reduce nausea risk at higher doses. The hepatotoxicity signal at very high doses in some case reports warrants staying within the researched dose range.
What it does
What Green Tea Extract / EGCG does in the body
Thermogenesis, fat oxidation, and modest appetite modulation. EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) is the primary catechin in green tea extract and its mechanism operates through inhibition of catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), the enzyme that breaks down norepinephrine. This extends the lifespan of norepinephrine at adipocyte receptors, amplifying the fat-releasing signal. When combined with caffeine, which stimulates norepinephrine release, the two compounds produce a synergistic thermogenic effect that is greater than either alone.

What the research actually shows
Moderate. Multiple meta-analyses confirm green tea catechins, particularly when combined with caffeine, produce statistically significant but modest reductions in body weight and fat mass over 12 weeks of consistent use. A 2009 meta-analysis of 11 trials found an average difference of 1.31 kg versus placebo. The effect is real but small and best understood as a modest multiplier on top of a caloric deficit rather than a standalone fat loss tool. Evidence for the caffeine-EGCG combination specifically is stronger than for EGCG alone.
