The Complete Supplement Guide

The verdict

Is MCT Oil worth taking?

MCT oil is not a fat burner in the way most marketing implies. It is a rapidly metabolized fat that is preferentially converted to ketones rather than stored, which produces modest but real appetite suppression and a small thermogenic effect relative to long-chain fats. The appetite suppression signal is probably its most practically useful application. Start with 1 teaspoon and work up slowly. GI distress including diarrhea and cramping is almost universal at full doses without a gradual titration period. C8 (caprylic acid) is the most efficiently ketogenic fraction.

What it does

What MCT Oil does in the body

Rapid ketone production from dietary fat, modest appetite suppression, a small thermogenic advantage over long- chain fats, and cognitive energy support. MCTs (medium-chain triglycerides) are absorbed directly into the portal circulation and transported to the liver for rapid oxidation, bypassing the lymphatic chylomicron pathway used by long-chain fats. This direct hepatic uptake results in faster ketone production than any long-chain fat regardless of dietary carbohydrate status.

The evidence

What the research actually shows

Moderate. The mechanisms of MCT absorption and ketone production are well characterized and not disputed. Human trial evidence for fat loss specifically shows a real but modest effect: a 2015 meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found MCT oil produced significantly greater reductions in body weight, waist circumference, and body fat compared to long-chain triglyceride control oils. The effect size is modest rather than dramatic. Appetite suppression evidence is consistent across multiple trials. There is no credible evidence MCT oil causes meaningful fat loss on its own outside of a broader dietary context.

Food first

Getting MCT Oil from food

Coconut oil contains approximately 50 to 60% MCTs by composition, making it the most accessible food-form MCT source, though with a higher proportion of C12 and less ketogenic efficiency than fractionated MCT oil. A tablespoon of coconut oil in cooking or beverages provides meaningful MCT content from food.

The newsletter

What I cooked this week

That is ten of them, with the research behind each. Every fortnight I send one meal from a working private kitchen — what I cooked, why, and what it was for. And when new evidence moves a grade in the guide, subscribers hear it first.
