Is L-Glutamine worth taking?
Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body and the primary fuel source for intestinal cells and immune cells. Its value in recovery is most pronounced under high training volume, caloric restriction, illness, or gut stress rather than in well-nourished athletes at maintenance. Take 5 g post-workout and 5 g before bed. Well-nourished athletes eating adequate protein will see modest benefits. Those in heavy training blocks, cutting phases, or recovering from illness will see the most meaningful response.
What it does
What L-Glutamine does in the body
Gut barrier integrity, immune recovery, muscle glycogen replenishment, anti-catabolic protection during stress, and nitrogen retention. Glutamine is conditionally essential, meaning the body can produce it but demand consistently exceeds supply under physical and metabolic stress. It is the primary energy source for enterocytes, the cells lining the intestinal wall, making it fundamental to gut barrier maintenance. During heavy training, illness, or caloric deficit, plasma glutamine levels fall significantly, compromising both gut integrity and immune function simultaneously.
The evidence
What the research actually shows
Moderate. Gut barrier integrity, intestinal permeability reduction, and immune recovery during high training loads are the most consistently supported applications. Muscle-building claims in well-nourished athletes with adequate protein intake are not well supported. The evidence is strongest in clinical contexts of physical stress, caloric deficit, illness recovery, and overtraining prevention rather than for muscle gain in already well-fed individuals.

Getting L-Glutamine from food
Beef, chicken, fish, eggs, dairy, and cabbage are among the highest food-form glutamine sources. A diet adequate in total protein from whole foods provides meaningful glutamine. The therapeutic role of supplemental glutamine is most relevant when total food intake is restricted or when training volume is high enough that endogenous production and dietary intake cannot meet demand.
