Ashwagandha is the most evidence-supported adaptogen in this guide. Its primary recovery mechanism is cortisol reduction, which directly accelerates tissue repair by removing one of the most potent catabolic signals the body produces. Lower cortisol creates a more anabolic recovery environment. Withanolides, the active steroidal lactones in ashwagandha, have also demonstrated direct effects on muscle recovery including reductions in creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase markers of muscle damage.

No practical food-form equivalent for withanolide activity. Ashwagandha root is consumed as a powder in warm milk in traditional Ayurvedic practice but at doses below clinical trial levels.
