Is Hyaluronic Acid worth taking?
Hyaluronic acid is the primary lubricating molecule in joint fluid and connective tissue. Oral supplementation at 80 to 200 mg daily with low molecular weight forms has demonstrated measurable improvements in joint pain and mobility in multiple trials. Molecular weight matters critically for oral absorption. A 2025 combination study including HA with glucosamine, chondroitin, collagen, and omega-3 showed significant synergistic benefit for joint pain. Fermentation-derived HA is the cleanest and most consistent source.
What it does
What Hyaluronic Acid does in the body
Joint lubrication, synovial fluid viscosity, skin hydration and elasticity, connective tissue hydration, and cartilage surface protection. Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan naturally present in extremely high concentrations in synovial fluid, cartilage, vitreous humor, and skin. It functions as a viscous lubricant and shock absorber in joints, directly reducing friction and protecting cartilage surfaces during movement. HA concentration in synovial fluid declines measurably with age and with osteoarthritis progression, making restoration a logical therapeutic target.
The evidence
What the research actually shows
Moderate. Intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid has a long and consistent evidence base for joint pain. Oral supplementation evidence has improved substantially with low molecular weight forms that absorb systemically. Multiple trials confirm oral HA improves knee pain, joint mobility, and skin hydration. A 2025 study using a combination formula including HA at 20 mg showed statistically significant reductions in joint pain scores versus control with no complications detected.
Food first
Getting Hyaluronic Acid from food
Bone broth and slow-cooked connective tissue contribute glycosaminoglycans to the diet including small amounts of HA. Root vegetables and leafy greens support HA production indirectly through connective tissue metabolism. Therapeutic oral HA doses are not achievable from food. Intra-articular injection is the most effective delivery route for direct joint applications but requires medical administration.
